Notable Representations

United Federation of Teachers v. Board of Education of the City of New York, --- N.Y.S.2d ---, 2011 WL 294283 (N.Y. Sup. Ct., N.Y. County 2011). On behalf of Dow Jones, The New York Times, New York Daily News, New York Post and cable news network NY1, Amanda, Dave Schulz, and Cameron Stracher defeated a suit by the teachers' union seeking to block the Board of Education from disclosing reports on teachers' job performance. The LSKS team convinced the court that public employees have no significant privacy interest in the performance of their public functions, and that release of the reports was crucial to local control of public schools.

People v. Williams, (N.Y. Sup. Ct., Nassau County 2010). Amanda successfully represented Newsday in seeking access to copies of videotape evidence used in a murder trial in New York state court. The court affirmed the constitutional and common law rights of access to court proceedings and the public’s right to inspect and copy any item entered into evidence at a public trial.

Fudge v. Phoenicia Times, 2009 WL 2568576 (N.D.N.Y. 2009). Amanda successfully defended a newspaper, its publisher and its editor in a suit asserting libel and Section 1983 civil rights claims.

In re Nassau County Strip Search Cases (E.D.N.Y. 2009). Amanda successfully represented Newsday in seeking access for its reporter to participate in a jail visit by the judge presiding over a class action lawsuit against Nassau County concerning conditions in its jails and unlawful strip searches of inmates.
